NFPA 96 Hood Cleaning Requirements: A Business Owner's Guide

- The Horizontal and Vertical Ducts: Clean the entire path where grease travels.

2. Access Panels

NFPA 96 requires that grease ducts have access panels installed at regular intervals (especially at changes of direction) so that technicians can inspect and clean the entire interior. If your ductwork lacks access panels, they must be professionally installed.
3. Roof Fan Hinge Kit
Exhaust fans on the roof are heavy and must be tilted back to clean the blades and the vertical duct below. NFPA 96 requires that these fans be equipped with a heavy-duty hinge kit. Without a hinge, tilting the fan can damage electrical wiring, warp the fan shroud, or injure the technician.
4. Certified Cleaners & Documentation
Cleanings must be performed by trained, qualified, and certified persons. Once completed, a certificate or sticker showing the cleaning date, next scheduled date, and the name of the servicing company must be posted on the hood. A copy of the service report must also be kept on-site for inspection by the local fire marshal or insurance adjusters.
